Name

Monument to Jews Killed in War and National Resistance

Who is Commemorated?

Jewish soldiers killed fighting against Italians and Germans

Description

The monument consists of two mazevah-type steles set next to each other in the courtyard of the synagogue, to the left of the building entrance. The smaller stone is titled back at an angle and rests against a hidden stone support, making the inscription more legible, but exposing it more to the elements. The stele has an unusual curved top edge. Inscribed on the front are the names, written in Greek, of nine soldiers and Resistance fighters from the Volos Jewish community killed in battle against the Italians and the Germans.

To the right of this is a larger thicker stone of white marble with a smooth front and rough edges. The top of the stone is cut with a deep U-shaped indentation into which is set a bronze 7-branch menorah. In the center of the stone face is a raised bronze relief of a dove holding an olive branch. Slightly above the dove and to each side of the menorah is an inscribed Magen David.  Below the dove are cut three recessed panels, which are set in three lines, in Hebrew, the words of the prayer Shema.
