The Jewish Holocaust Victims from Zeeland

Description

This memorial, in the Jewish Cemetery of Middelburg, is made up of three elements. Two rectangular stone slabs, with inscriptions in Dutch and Hebrew and lists of victim names, flank a small menorah. Behind the menorah is a tall stone pillar of the same material that has the years of the holocaust in the Gregorian and Jewish Calendars inscribed on its face and a cap with a Magen David.

Left Slab (Dutch)

Ter gedaehtenis aan hen, wier namen hier zun vermelo,
de Joden van zeeland, kinderen van ons volk,
die in de Jaren 1940_1945 door de vuand
medogenloos weggerukt en omgebracht werden,
omdat zu waren van Joodse stam.

Mogen hun zielen rusten in des almachtigen schaduw

Translation: In memory of those whose names are mentioned here, the Jews of Zeeland, children of our people, those ruthlessly snatched and slain in the years 1940-1945 by the vuand, because they were of the Jewish tribe. / May their souls rest in the shadow of the almighty / [list of names]

לזכרון אחינו ואחיותינו בית ישראל יהודי זאהלאנד
חללי השואה בשנות ת'ש_תש'ה
אשר נעקרו ממקום שבתם בידים אכזריות
ונפלו חללים לקדושת השם

נשמותיהם בצל שדי יתלוננו
ואלה שמותם:

Translation: In memory of our brothers and sisters of Beit Yisrael, the Jews of Zaheland, victims of the holocaust in the years 1940-1945 who were uprooted from their place of residence by cruel hands and fell as martyrs to the holiness of God
