Summary and Remarks
History

During the Rivne ghetto liquidation on July 13–14, 1942, approximately 5,200 Jews were brought from Rivne to the forest near Kostopil and killed there [Tsal Kaplun Foundation].

The first monument was erected here in 1985. Its Ukrainian inscription did not mention the ethnicity of the Victims.

The second monument with a Magen David and Yiddish, Hebrew and Ukrainian inscriptions was unveiled in the early July 1994. The district authority, Jews of Kostopil and their descendants from Israel, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine took part in the meeting-requiem. One of the Survivors, Hanna Nusenblat, brought soil from Israel to the monument. A Deputy of the Main Rabbi of Ukraine and Archpriest of Kostopil district took part in the event. Participants lit memorial candles, listened to the Israel and Ukrainian anthems [Zakaliuk].
