Stone 100

ST. LOUIS
THE ST. LOUIS WAS A GERMAN OCEAN LINER THAT
SAILED FROM HAMBURG IN MAY 1939 CARRYING 930
JEWS AND SIX OTHER VOYAGERS WHO HELD ENTRY
CERTIFICATES FOR CUBA BUT WHO WERE TOLD
EN ROUTE THAT THEIR DOCUMENTS HAD BEEN
INVALIDATED. ONLY 23 PASSENGERS WERE ADMITTED
TO HAVANA. THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT
REFUSED ENTRY EVEN FOR THE OVER 700 WHO HAD AFFIDAVITS OF SUPPORT.
SOUTH AMERICAN
PORTS ALSO REMAINED CLOSED.

AMERICAN JEWISH FUNDS ULTIMATELY ENABLED THE
GROUP TO ENTER GREAT BRITAIN, BELGIUM, FRANCE
AND THE NETHERLANDS, BUT MOST WOULD DIE IN
THE HOLOCAUST.
