Who is Commemorated?

2,400 Jews of Biržai and other places in the district murdered at this site.

Description:

The monument is situated on the killing site. The area of the killing pit is a raised earthen embankment. It is accessible by steps and the platform is paved with tiles.

A large fieldstone stands at the far edge of the platform. A brown granite plaque with inscriptions in Yiddish and Lithuanian is affixed to it. The Star of David is depicted above the inscription.

Shrubs planted around the monument almost overshadow it.

Translation: On this place, / the Hitlerite murderers and / their local helpers, / on August 8, 1941, murdered / more than 2,400 Jews - / men, women, children / and about 90 Lithuanians.

Šiose vietojs hitleriniai budeliai ir jų talkininkai 1941.VIII. 08.
nužudė apie 2400 žydų – vyrų, moterų, vaikų ir apie 90 lietuvių

Translation: At these places, Hitler’s executioners and their helpers murdered about 2,400 Jews – men, women, and children – on August 8, 1941, and about 90 Lithuanians.
