History/Provenance

Čavusy (Chausy) was occupied on July 15, 1941 [Yad Vashem: The Untold Stories]. In all, around 675 Jews were murdered there. All the executions were carried out by Sonderkommando 7b, a sub unit of Einsatzgruppe The execution site was located near the former Kommandantur [The Map of Holocaust by Bullets: Yahad-In Unum].

In 1955, Abram Molochnikov, Abram Sommerov, and other local Jews raised the sum of 50,000 rubles from relatives of the victims, transferred the victims’ remains to the Jewish cemetery in Čavusy (Chausy), and erected the present monument at the site.

Former residents of Čavusy (Chausy) hold a memorial ceremony for the victims annually [Yad Vashem: The Untold Stories]. Till today, the monument is the place of commemorative ceremonies.
