Who is Commemorated?

The former Joint Street (originally Džointo gatve) whis was part of the Panevėžys Ghetto

Description:

The monument is situated in the central part of Panevėžys, at J. Zikaras Street.

The monument is made of two black granite steles with a small square plaque connecting them. The steles stand on a low granite base. Both steles bear inscriptions: the left one in English and the right one in Lithuanian. The small plaque bears the emblem of the JDC and the dates.

At this place in 1923
the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee
(JDC) foundead a residential 
area. Panevėžys City 
Council named the street
Džointo in honor of 
the organisation.
In July-August 1941
the block was turned into
a ghetto.

If there is a poor person
among you, one of your
brothers within any of your
gates in the land the Lord
your God is giving you, you
you must not be hardhearted
or tightfisted toward your
poor brother.

kvartalą. Organizacijos
garbei Panevėžio miesto
taryba gatvei suteikė
Džointo vardą. 1941 m. 
liepos-rugpjūčio mėnesiais
kvartas buvo paverstas
getu.
