The work represents a portrait of a portly man about thirty years old sitting on a black bent-wood chair. The chair is standing frontally, the man, however, is sitting on it sideways. The figure of the man shown in its full length is turned to the left. His right hand bent in the elbow is leaning over the back of the chair as though following its outlines. The left hand clasps the right one. ##The man is wearing a grey shirt and grey trousers belted with a black girdle. His figure casts to the right on a pink floor a dark grey shadow.

Summary and Remarks
M.Akselrod got acquainted with I.Babel approximately in 1929 while illustrating "The History of My Dove-cote" by I.Babel. Probably, that time the writer could sit for the portrait. On the back of the work there is a study for the painting from the series "In Steppe".
