The following description was prepared by William Gross:
The shofar was a ritual object used in every Jewish community in the world. Its shape often depended on what animals lived in the area whose horns were permitted for the use on the holy days of Rosh haShanah and Yom Kippur. The typical long, twisted shape of the shofar as in this example is charactaristic of that used in Yemen. Its relatively great length and volume produce a very rich tone for this beloved holiday ritual.
