Description

This text was prepared by William Gross:

A book of laws regarding ritual slaughter and kashrut, this was authored by one of the foremost rabbis of Yemen. This text is quite often found in Yemenite manuscripts. (see gross YM.011.015) the volume contains other commentaries as well. There is another printed copy of this book in the Gross Family Collection. This example is bound with another printed book from Aden, the both of them being among the very first books issued from the Hebrew press in that city.
Hebrew printing in Aden began in 1891. In fact, Aden was the only place in Yemen where Hebrew books were printed. The thousands of sifrei kodesh used by Yemenite Jews were handwritten, with important longer books being sent abroad for printing, primarily to Jerusalem.
