A seal is a device for making an impression in wax, clay, paper, or some other medium, including an embossment on paper, and is also the impression thus made. The original purpose was to authenticate a document, a wrapper for one such as a modern envelope, or the cover of a container or package holding valuables or other objects. They have been used for two thousand years, also by Jews.

Almost all religious institutions in Eretz Israel had special seals with imagery of the place in which they were located. Many such seals are seen from Jerusalem with the image of the Kotel, such as this example. This seal is from the Chevrat Bnot Tzion, an Ashkenazi institution.
