The following description was prepared by William Gross:
Charity is a major value within the Jewish Community and alms boxes to collect money for various ends were a regualr and normal part of Jewish life, both at home and at communal events. Several such vessels are in the Gross Family Collection both antique and modern. This was crafted by the famous Israeli artist Zelig Segal. The work was commissioned by Mark Levy of Los Angeles and made in a number of copies which, in honor of his 70th birthday he and his wife gave to friends. This is one of those copies that was made in 1996.
