The following description was prepared by William Gross:

The crown, with a later mark of Breslau, is clearly a later addition.  There are marks difficult to decipher where the original crown and chains were attached. The exceptional engraving on the flat surface of the Torah Shield identifies the dating as most certainly 17th century, if not even earlier.  The gilt lettering is also of a very early character. The 16th-century shields in the JMNY and the Halpern collection are both of a similar small size.
