Description

This text was prepared by William Gross:

Jerusalem Talmud with the commentary Sadeh Yehoshua b. R. Joshua Raphael b. Israel Benveniste (d.c.1667-1668). Although R. Benveniste trained as a physician, he apparently did not practice that profession, instead serving as a rabbi in Constantinople. He has been described as one of the leading Talmudists of Turkey.
Title page with the three crowns first associated with the Bragadin press and later used by the Gabbai family (who acquired the Bragadin typographical material).
Avraham b. Yedidyah Gabai, whose father had printed in Livorno under the name La Stampa del Kaf Nahat, established a press in Izmir in 1657. The father was instrumental in founding the Izmir press, sending Avraham there with much of the typographical equipment from the Bragadin press to establish a Hebrew print shop. Avraham published in Izmir in two distinct periods, from 1657-1660, and again from 1671-1675. During the interim he went to Constantinople and printed there for a brief period of time. This book comes from that interim period.
Commentator: Yehoshua Benvenisti
