Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

Often covering the Torah reading stand was a textile, either a fine piece of fabric in its own right or, most often, embroidered. The Torah scroll is opened and laid upon this fabric for the reading. This silver object is a dedicatory plaque to be sewn to such a cover memorializing five individuals from the community, all family members of the woman who is the donor from the Nahon family, a prominent family in Tangier. There is a synagogue lamp with a personality from this family in the Gross Family Collection.

Inscription:  This is the Mapah (reader's desk covering) donated by the honorable and modest Mirah ??? the wife of the honorable Rav Yehudah Nahon, May hi Rock and Redeemer protect him, the son of the honorable Rav Ya'akov, May he rest in Eden, for the elevation of the soul ??? of Mr. Aviah Yitzhak Nahon, May he rest in Eden, the son of the Rav Shmuel, May he rest in Eden, and Mrs. Amah Clara ?? and the elevation of the souls of her three brothers who passed away during their best days, the first, the eldest of her brothers, the Rav Shmuel, May he rest in Eden, who passed away on Elul 24 in(5)644 [1884] and next to him the second of her brothers. Levi, who passed away on Sivan 10 (5)644 [1884] and for the third the honorable Shlomo, her brother who passed away on the great, holy and awesome day of Yom Hakippurim (5)651 [1890] to his credit that day that defend through them and will bring peace for their eternal rest, Amen may it be His will, "They are abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house; And thou makes them drink of the river of Thy pleasures" (Psalms 36:9), May their souls be bound up in the bond of life.
