Description
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
Belts were an important part of the local costume in the Caucasus area, both for men and for women. This object is for the female, called a "kamar", and is much more elaborate than the counterpart for men. Numerous silver Russian coins are attached to the leather part of the belt, and the buckle is very ornately worked in niello, including the inscription with the name of the owner and the date. Niello was a technique often used in ornamental silver work in this area. The niello work in the area was a specialty of the town of Kubachi in Dagestan.
