Description

This text was prepared by William Gross:

Explanations on Midrash Raba on the Torah, according to the order of the weekly portions, by Rabbi Shmuel Laniado of Aleppo.
R. Shmuel Laniado (1630-1705), a Safed sage, led the Aleppo Jewish community in Syria. He was sent to Aleppo by his teacher, Rabbi Yosef Karo, author of the Shulchan Aruch. R. Laniado was known as the Ba'al Ha-Kelim after his works: Kli Chemda, Kli Paz, Kli Golah and Kli Yakar.
Gershom b. Bezalel Katz was a member of the Gersonides, the largest Hebrew printing-press in Prague. While the period of his activity is unclear, he was active during the time when the press was headed by Moses b. Bezalel Katz (1601 - 1628). Gersonides' imprints are generally well-printed and many of their title pages are characterized by ornamental frames, and the inclusion of the Kohain's blessing hands.
