Summary and Remarks
History/Provenance

The synagogue was built in 1863 according to a design by Viennese architect Franz Macher in the Moorish-Byzantine style in place of an earlier original synagogue which no could no longer hold the capacity of worshippers. Services were held until 1940. The building was saved from demolition during the Nazi occupation due to its being transformed in 1943 into an exhibition space for museum display, a function it continues today.
