Telmecen, a city in western Algeria, is not a normal source for printed amulets. This nicely designed and very early printed example of a birth amulet was created there for the holy society of Paitanim, a confraternity that served the needs of the Jewish community. There is a variety of imagery, including the Magen David, the lion, and two hands conveying the amuletic power of the hamsa and probably representing the hands of the priestly blessing as well.   there are amuletic inscriptions for the protection against Lilith and the names of the patriarchal couples.
