Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

During the last half of the 18th century, many birth amulets were printed in Germany, primarily in the areas of Sulzbach and Fuerth. They were usually specifically for a male or female child and seem to have been printed in pairs, as in Gross Family Collection 027.011.002, where they are printed together, and in Gross Family Collection 027.011.004 and 027.011.063, where they have been separated. This example probably has the pair, an amulet for the female child, printed on another sheet. These amulets often carry an illustration of either a male or female figure.  These illustrations seem to have been taken from stock illustrations, often for the zodiac signs, and they sometimes appear on other printed pages for Jewish uses other than amulets.

The texts, in both Hebrew and Yiddish, contain the traditional "Shir le-Ma’alot" (Psalm 121), the names of the three angels whose names, Sanoi, Sansanoi and Samangalaf, and other invocations for protection against Lilith. There are other amuletic texts as well. The amulet is printed with a decorative border.

The depiction of the female figure seems to have been taked from a stock wood block. The figure, holding a wreath, i likely to have been a Zodiac illustration for the sign of Virgo. These signs appear on other printed pages for Jewish use in addition to those on amulets and it appears as well in a woman's prayer book from 1776 published in Fuerth, Gross Family Collection B.366. A different version of the image appears as well on a school chart, Gross Family Collection 128.011.002. There are two other examples of this amulet in the Gross Family Collection: 027.011.002 and 027.011.663.  But each of these same images are from different printings of the amulet, as the printer's devices forming the decorative frame around the text are different in each case. While there is no printer's name, these decorative border printer's devices were used on other Hebrew printed items from the Hebrew press in Fuerth. So it is most likely that this amulet was printed there. The field of such devices in not well explored, but it is clear that they can be of use in identifying otherwise unmarked printed sheets and books.
