The following description was prepared by William Gross:
In the center of this amulet printed on grey paper is a large Hebrew letter, "heh", indicating that this is a birth amulet. Inside the cross-hatched letter is depicted a hamsah. The use of the Hebrew letter "heh" is thought to be connected with fertility and is also considered to represent one of the names of god. The letter is the fifth letter in the Hebrew alphabet and represents the number five in the Hebrew numbering system, thereby suggesting the five fingers of the hamsa. Hence the letter "heh" in and of itself has amuletic significance. The hand itself is presented in a realistic image in the center of the amulet, inside the large Hebrew letter "heh".Such printed amulets from Bagdhad are not common. The names of angels are printed here as are abbreviations representing kabbalistic phrases. At the top is the use of the Hebrew biblical phrase "ben porat yosef........" (Joseph is a fruitful vine....) from Genesis 49:22. The use of this quotation confers protection against the evil eye through josephs immunity and is also associated with fertility.
The Jewish community of Iraq numbered some 150,000 in 1948, almost all of whom immigrated to Israel in the several years following.
