Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

This is an almost elephant folio size manuscript, originally made in 1806 for the Chevrah Kadisha of Kormende, a town in Hungary near the Austrian border.  The Chevrah Kadisha was the prestigious society for burial rituals and other good works in the community. These confraternities, organized very much like the non-Jewish guilds, copied some of their organization and customs as well, such as decorated bylaw and protocol books. Apparently, when the pages in the original binding were filled, the original leaves with the bylaws were removed and bound anew with other blank pages for the continued recording of protocols.  In this example, that rebinding seems to have happened around 1844, and the new pages are filled in until 1910. The pages were bound in a finely tooled leather binding with silver ornaments, including a central heart shape with an engraved inscription containing the date. There are five illustrated and decorated pages, each giving another aspect of the scribe's skills, including decorated letters. The page revealed here is a magnificent micrographic portrait of king Solomon utilizing the text of the "song of songs".
