Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

This is an interesting printed sheet that is part of a series of gold-inked lithographs from Algeria. They all seem to be related to the circumcision ceremony. The use for this plaque appears to have been to hang it above the chair of Elijah during the circumcision ceremony or, perhaps, the hanging of the plaque above a normal chair converted it to the chair of Elijah for the ceremony.  In the center is the Menorat Hameor from the Temple. On the two sides of the Menorah in the upper section are hands that can be interpreted as the hands for the priestly blessing or Hamsot to ward off the evil eye while on the lower section are symbolic representations of objects used in the Temple. On the top is a general blessing for the newly born male child.

This example is a cruder copy of an amulet already in the Gross Family Collection, 027.011.401 that contains the same elements but in a more refined manner.
