Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

A finely written amulet for an ill person to help him recover and against the evil eye which has been put on him from some woman. The name of the person has been erased. The central element is the depiction of the inscribed hamsa. The hand is labelled "Yad Hagedolah", the "great hand". The intention is to remember Joseph the Rightous, making this a specific hamsa belonging to him on whom the evil eye had no power. He does not wish the maker of the curse any evil, just to leave him in peace.

The kamea is in the Moroccan tradition, using Aramaic as used in Morocco.

Even though the scroll is written for a man, the name is later erased and on the back is written the name of a woman in a secondary use, a very unusual phenomenon for such amulets that were usually put into the Genizah after their use.
