Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

A very long and beautifully written and illustrated amulet, probably from Iraqi Kurdistan where such lengthy amulets were often written for children to keep under their pillows. Both the use of color and the style of script indicate a Kurdish provenance. The amulet is written in black and red ink, and is illustrated with a wide variety of amuletic symbols. The amulet was written for a male, Yosef ben Katoon, and is a general protection amulet, also for success.

The presentation of the 3 angels in the round is very unusual as are several of the elaborate visual sections of the scroll. These include the Kabbalistic hand and the sword so often depicted on amulets frum Kurdistan. Additionally there are represented magic squares, the Magen David, angel writing, and the Raziel diagram for success. The entire almost 4 meters of scroll are filled with delicate script of amuletic formulas.

There are five long amulets of this sort in the Gross Family Collection.
