Obj. ID: 51472 Amulet, Israel/Eretz Israel, circa 1950
sub-set tree:
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
Written on a piece of parchment, this amulet carries a variety of visual symbols. Most prominent is the stylized recognizable figures of Lilith and the 3 angels that appear on almost all the work of this scribe in the lower part of the scroll. The amulet turns to the power of the four rivers of paradise as listed in Kabbalah. The image of the hand with the thumb to the left symbolizes the Kabbalistic value of Gevurah. Below the hand is the drawing of a knife to frighten Lilith. The purpose of the amulet is to protect the mother and child as well as easing fears and anxieties. There is no name on the amulet, but rather it states that it is effective for anyone carrying it. The length of the amulet is framed by text.
In the Gross Family Collection there are 8 other amulets written by the same scribe - 027.011.281, 027.011.399, 027.011.691 on paper and 027.023.065, 027.012.076, 027.012.089, 027.012.105, and 027.012.260.
