Description

The following description was prepared by William Gross:

Right around 1960, papercuts, copying those pictured in a 1920's book about ethnography in Poland by Lilientalowa, were produced in Poland for sale. This is one of the versions that were handmade at the time and is one of two in the Gross Family Collection. It is a perfect example of the "Shevuoselach" that was made for the holiday of Shavuot, to decorate the synagogue on that festive day. They were largely produced by Yeshivah students in a relatively simple form, mostly without texts, and were discarded after the holiday. There is a rare, large collection of such papercuts in the Eretz Israel Museum in Ramat Aviv, Israel.
