Description

This text was prepared by William Gross:

Biblia Hebraica / Esrim VeArba'a [Twenty four (books of the Bible)] - The five Books of the Torah, with Nevi'im Rishonim, Achronim and Ketuvim "according to the order of the 'open' and 'closed' parshiot… without vowels… meticulously proofread". Amsterdam, [1701]. Printed by Gerardus Borstius and partners.
Three title pages, the first is illustrated with a copperplate engraving depicting Moses and Aharon and the Kodesh HaKodashim (Holy of Holies). The second title page is in Hebrew and the third in Latin. Latin introduction and Hebrew poem: "Torat Olam…". Two columns per page. Rabbi Aryeh Levine was accustomed to using this 1701 edition of the Bible for performing Goral HaGra according to the special tradition passed on to him from the Vilna Gaon, via his teachers, heads of the Volozhin Yeshiva. [For information about the famous Goralot (lots) performed by Rabbi Aryeh Levine for identifying the bodies of the Lamed Heh convoy that died in service, see the enclosed copy of the book "Ish Tsaddik Haya", pp. 113-117, with a photo of the Bible which was used for the Goral].
Elaborate engraved frontispiece. Leusden edition of the Hebrew Bible by non-Jews
