The following description was prepared by William Gross:
Such snuff boxes were used at Sabbath and festival synagogue prayers. During long hours of prayer, snuff boxes were passed around to the participants as a stimulant to maintain alertness and concentration. This is a nice example of the Eretz Israel snuff box, inscribed in 1920. It is most unusual in that the box was made from silver that includes a Shmirot coin from a Tzadik, a revered Hassidic Rabbi
Inscription: From Shmirot Tzadikim in memory of Rabeinu Yechiel bar Yosef, passed away on the 18th of the month of Nisan, 5680 [1920]
The front illustration in an oval is very similar to that on another snuff box in the Gross Family Collection, 029.001.005, and may be by the same hand.
