Obj. ID: 35602 Kiddush cup, Afghanistan, 1935
sub-set tree:
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
This object is a large concave bowl with a gold Magen David in the center of the bottom. Around the inner edge is an inscription which indicates that this was used for magical restorative purposes. The bowl was filled with water and the ill person drank from it, the water-absorbing healing qualities from the amuletic power of the bowl. On the outside are engraved and chased Persian style decoration. This decoration includes both animal life and scenes of the western wall in Jerusalem and the tomb of the patriarchs in Hebron. This bowl is an enlarged version of a more common and smaller wine cup used in the region, of which there is an example in the Gross family collection.
Inscription: FROM MISHLEI 3:8 AND YESHAYAHU 12:4. ALSO: SHALOM, MY HIS ROCK AND REDEEMER PROTECT HIIM, SON OF MOSHE, MAY HIS ROCK AND REDEEMER PROTECT HIM, GULI (Family name)
