Description:

The monument is a metal "lectern" with a plastic plaque. The plaque bears identical inscriptions in Polish, Hebrew, English, and German, the depiction of the Red Mouse granary, and a map showing the placement of the granary and that of the plaque.

gdańskich Żydów.

Hebrew:

באתר זה עמד אסם "העכבר האדום", בו בקחץ 1940
הנאצים הקימו גטו של בניין אחד בשביל יהודי גדנסק.

English:

The Red Mouse granary, where the German
Nazis created a ghetto for Gdańsk Jews in the
summer of 1940, stood here.

German:

An dieser Stelle befand sich der Speicher Rote
Maus, in dem die deutschen Nazis im Sommer
1940 ein Ghetto für die Danziger Juden
errichtet haben.

History/Provenance

From 1940, the Red Mouse Granary on the island served as the ghetto for the Danzig's remaining 600 Jews and the last stop before deportation to death camps. The building was destroyed by bombing in 1945.

The plaque was installed on the initiative of poet and musician Grzegorz Kwiatkowski and unveiled on December 7, 2023.

In January 2024, the plaque was vandalized.
