History/Provenance

Belgrade’s Sephardi Beth Israel Synagogue (El Kal Vež Synagogue) was designed by Milan Kapetanovic and built in 1908 with architect V. Azriel supervising the construction. The Moorish style building was destroyed by the Germans in World War II, but published accounts differ. It was seemingly damaged and burned during the German bombardment of Belgrade in 1941, and the ruins where torn down later. A modern building to house the Gallery of Frescos of the National Museum was built in the post-war period.
