Jewish Funerary Art Jewish cemetery in Człopa, Poland
According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the Jewish cemetery in Człopa was probably established in the 17th century. It is situated at today’s Mickiewicza Street. It covers an area of 0.7 ha.
In 1938, Jews were expelled from the city, and the property of the community was taken over by the municipal authorities. The cemetery was devastated and closed. In 1992, it was entered into the register of monuments. Only a few tombstones have survived in the cemetery, the oldest of which dates back to 1861.
ESJF team has found 120 tombstones. Most of them are the frames of the graves and the bases of the tombstones, the rest are small fragments. The cemetery is fenced only from the north and east sides with a metal mesh fence (standard height) belonging to the neighbouring municipal cemetery.
The Jewish cemetery in Człopa is located along the road to the villages of Załom and Golin (Wiejska Street), around 50 meters from this road, and is directly adjacent to the municipal cemetery (separated by a common fence). Access to the site is difficult, requiring a climb of the cemetery slope along uncomfortable, blurred and overgrown paths. One of these leads from the sandy square located between Wiejska and Mickiewicza streets, alongside the fence of the municipal cemetery. Cadastral parcel no. 321702_4.0106.25
