Who is Commemorated?

Kinsfolk of the Cape Jewry and six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Description:

The monument is situated in the middle of the central passageway of the cemetery.

It is a stele made of unpolished granite stones, with a cornice and two “shoulder.” The stele is placed on a pedestal of two stairs and its plot is paved with uneven pieces of black marble.

The main inscription is written on a marble plaque attached to the stele’s western side. It contains a dedication and Biblical verses in Hebrew and English. The plaque is surmounted by a protruding sculpture of flame. Is seems that the plaque was renewed in 2003.

On the upper stair, there is an English inscription stating that the monument was “erected by Cape Jewry.”

A marble stone is situated in the front of the stele and probably was placed there after its construction. It has an inscription in Hebrew, Yiddish and English “Remember 6,000,000.”

A plaque with an inscription about 2003 renovation is situated at the northwestern corner of the kerbside.

Inscriptions

On the main plaque:

Hebrew:

אבן מקיר תזעק

מזכיר אהבה

אלה אזכרה ואשפכה עלי נפשי.
מים רבים לא יוכלו לכבות
את האהבה ונהרות לא ישטפוה.
יחיו מתיך... כי טל אורת
