A historical marker is set in the middle of the back of the bench.

Jan Karski (1914-2000) was an emissary and courier of the Polish Secret State during World War II. As a witness of the Holocaust, he presented his famous “Karski Report” on the mass murder of Jews in occupied Poland to the governments of the Allied powers.
The statue in New York near the Polish consulate in New York was unveiled on November 22nd, 2007. Many distinguished guests, including representatives of the President of Poland and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended the ceremony. Former US President, and student of Jan Karski at Georgetown University, Bill Clinton sent his personal letter. In 2009 the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and East 37th Street was renamed in honor of Jan Karski.
