Hebrew Illuminated Manuscripts Engagement Contract, Jerusalem, 1905
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
The “tena’im” (conditions) is a contract between the families of the prospective bride and groom that creates the “engagement” of the couple. This is an orthodox custom dating back more than 1500 year and generally sets the date and financial commitments for the marriage. The contract was read publicly. While this ceremony is less customary than in the past, there are both manuscript and printed versions existing.
A most unusual manuscript version of an engagement contract, written and decorated at the top in fine design and colors. This is a highly unusual form, as in most cases the contract was printed. For some reason there are two identical copies of this contract regarding the text. Perhaps a copy was made for each person. Only the colors and slight design variation of the decoration at the top exists. The second copy is 034.011.078.
