Jewish Funerary Art Jewish cemetery in Oster, Ukraine
According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown. However, it appears on Russian maps of the region from the 1880s, so it can be assumed it was founded in the latter half of the 19th century. The oldest preserved tombstone dates from the early 20th century.
The front face of the cemetery is protected by a metal fence, with slate fencing on the southern side. The northern side of the site is partially lined with a wooden fence, but the remainder of the northern side and the eastern side are entirely unfenced. The cemetery's old section is severely overgrown with trees and bushes. Some of the tombstones have been damaged by falling trees and branches. The cemetery's last groundskeeper died on February 6th 2020, and it has gone unprotected since as there is no set replacement. The ravine dividing the Jewish and Christian cemeteries is used by locals as a dump. It appears the cemetery's older section is mixed, as it contains toppled metal crosses.
There are about 240 gravestones.
