Jewish Funerary Art Jewish cemetery in Stepantsi, Ukraine
According to ESJF European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative, the exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown but the oldest preserved gravestone dates to the early 20th century. The cemetery can first be found marked on a Russian topographic map from the 1860s and, later, on maps from 1941. As such, it can be assumed that it already existed in the mid 19th century. The majority of the cemetery was demolished. There are numerous bones scattered around the cemetery (some of which belong to animals). Part of the site is used as a dump. There are 16 gravestones and a few basic stones on the site. The preserved tombstones have been toppled and the ground has been dug up around the site.
