Sacred and Ritual Objects Amulet, Ukraine, circa 1980
The following description was prepared by William Gross:
When a person is afflicted with what might be deemed evil spirits a towel is placed on the head of the affected person, and a pan of water placed on top of that. Lead is melted in a utensil, and is then poured into the water, in which it instantly solidifies. The forms and shapes of the solidified lead are supposed to give hints as to the source of the difficulty.
This amulet is derived from the results of this custom, symbolizing a form created as the hot lead hits the cool water. Inscribed on this piece of lead are permutations of the letters Mem, Lamed and Chet.
