Jewish Funerary Art Tombstone of Pola in Ptuj, Slovenia, 1327
Two fragments probably belonged to a tombstone, which was an arched stela, inscribed with an epitaph in Hebrew. The epitaph reads:
משמן
בשרי רזה
ואנחתי רבה
עד הגל הזה
[ועד המצבה] [בראשית לא, נב]
נפטרית זוגתי
מרת פולא ביום
השבת כ"ב לאדר
הראשון פ"ז לפרט
ותנצב"ה א' [א' סלה]
Of fathness
My flesh is gaunt
And my moanis great
This heap be witness
[and this pillar] [Gen. 31:52]
Died my spouse,
Mrs. Fula, on the day
of Sabbath, 22 of Adar
The first, 87 [year] according to small count [=14 February 1327]
And may her soul to be bound in the bundle of life, Amen, [amen, forever]
