The picture depicts a Jewish home after a pogrom. Two bleeding bodies, a woman’s and a little girl’s, are sprawled on the floor of a looted and destroyed interior. A wounded soldier in uniform, leaning on his crutch, covers his face with his hands in a gesture of despair. On the left, seated on a stool next to the victims, an old bearded Jew prays. Near the door, at the upper right, stand a group of three people, a bearded man, a woman with a headcovering, and a young girl, who observe the scene. The broken window and wall on the left, the disheveled dresser with its open drawers, the torn mizrah plaque and the broken mirror on the wall above the dresser --all indicate violence and destruction. The female victim’s dress is cut, exposing, exposing her undergarments and chest, alluding to sexual violence. A small candle is burning in a small candle-s on the dresser. Blood and torn clothes are scattered around the room.
