  Ryback, A Bearded Man

© Center for Jewish Art, Photographer: Radovan, Zev, 02.1987

A portrait of a bearded man is depicted in a Cubist manner. The facets which form the figure are in varying colors, textures and patterns. He has a red and white beard and red hair and closes his eyes. He wears a hat and jacket and sits on an armchair which rests on a rug with a decorated border. His left arm rests on the armrest of the chair and a piece of paper with a Yiddish inscription is set on his right arm. The inscription reads as follows:

A skewed window with four panes of glass is depicted on the left of the composition. The window frames a village scene with a house, a cow and a man in a cart with a horse at the harness. A church and a cloud-shaped form appear in the top right of the window.

An inscription on the back of the canvas reads: "3h I.Ryback, Ein Mann am fenster, Neue winterfeld str. 40".

Summary and Remarks

The painting's current title was provided by Mrs Sonia Ryback, although the inscription on the back of the canvas includes the title "A Man by a Window".
