Translation: Memorial Sign to the Victims of Fascism

Who is Commemorated?

Jewish victims of the Holocaust from Kosiv and nearby villages

Description

This monument is located on the killing site near the Mass Graves on Zamkova (Miska) Hora in Kosiv not far from the Jewish cemetery. It is a large, roughhewn stone with an inscription. When the monument was erected in 1968, its inscription was engraved on the stone, and didn't mention the Jewish ethnicities of the victims. In 1994, a renovation of the Monument was carried out. A part of the initial inscription, including the words "Soviet citizens" was erased and a plaque with Ukrainian and Hebrew inscriptions was bolted to the stone. The plaque also bears two Magen David above the inscriptions. Both new inscriptions specify the Jewish ethnicities of the victims.

History/Provenance

According to the Tsal Kaplun Foundation, Kosiv was occupied by Nazi Germany on July 1, 1941. On October 16, 1941, about 900 Jews were taken to the Zamkova (Miska) Hora and shot there. The next day, about 1,200 more Jews were killed at the site.

The Monument was erected in 1968. It was made in Lviv Ceramic and Sculpture Factory. The Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Executive Committee included the monument to the list of Monuments of History and Monumental Art of Local Importance by decision no. 612/4 on November 28, 1969 [Ivano-Frankivska oblast]. In 1994, the Monument was reconstructed. The top part of the initial inscription with the words "Soviet citizens" was erased. A plaque with Ukrainian and Hebrew inscriptions was bolted to the stone [Solovka].
