Sacred and Ritual Objects Corona, Italy, 1823
The Torah crown is formed of a coronet supporting five arms.
The cylindrical coronet tapers towards the base and is adorned with Sanctuary Implements, each enclosed within a frame with arched top and base and are set against a net fabric-like design. The Implements include the Laver and Basin (Ex. 30:18) represented by a hand holding a jar and pouring water into a bowl. The two arched Tablets of the Covenants are inscribed with the beginning of the commandments (Ex. 31: 18).
They are followed by the Altar of burnt offerings (Ex. 27:1- 8) depicted as a square altar with a burning fire. The seven-branched Menorah with rounded branches (Ex. 25:31-39) is placed on a rectangular base. The last implement is the Altar of incense (Ex. 30: 1-4) represented as a bowl covered with a lid and suspended from a chain.
Below each implement is a pair of flamed cornucopia that surmounts a wreath. The wreaths are connected to each other creating a chain that runs along the coronet.
An inscribed band border the base of the coronet. The dedication is in Hebrew square bold letters and reads:
"כתר תורה שלי אשר מונטיל יצ"ו (ישמרהו צורו ויחיהו) שנת התקפ"ג."
"The Torah crown (was donated by) Sheli (possibly intials, see: Remarks: no. 1) Asher Montille, Mat the Lord sustain him, the year 5583 (1823)."
The arms are shaped as elongated acanthus leaves and are gathered on top forming a cupola. An undulating apex is set on top, while on the base a cylindrical unit for inserting the Torah staves is attached.
