Sacred and Ritual Objects Torah Ark curtain, Israel/Eretz Israel, 1937
The bordaux rectangular Parokhet is a cloth. It encloses an elliptical floral motif at the center surmounted by a white rectangular core framed by a golden strip. The floral motif is composed of six bouquets of flowers pointing outwards enclosing a floral motif surrounded by four scrolls at the center. Four similar bouquets pointing towards the center are in each corner of the cloth. Fleur de lys and stems with flowers are spread around the cloth.
The core bears a Hebrew dedicatory inscription written in square linear letters arranged in six lines that read:
"הפרוכת הזאת/ הקדיש שבתי ישראל/לעלוי נשמת אשתו/מרת שרה בת סול/שנפטרה כ"ח באב/ת'ר'צ'ז'"
This Parokhet was dedicated (by) Shabtai Israel for the exaltation of the soul of his wife/Mrs. Sarah daughter of Sol, who passed away on the 28th in the month of Av (5)687 (25.8.1937).
A strip of S shaped stems with an open flower frames the cloth.
Ten loops are attached to the top of the cloth.
The Parokhet is a secondary use of a map, which was a part of the wife's dowry. (This information was given by Mr. Armoza, the honorary officer of the synagogue.)
