The sarcophagus has a rectangular body and a high gabled lid with four acroteria on the corners. The front side of the sarcophagus is decorated with a rectangle flanked by wreaths. The right narrow side is decorated with a disc. The back and left side are undecorated. On the front of the lid is a Hebrew inscription. The front side - is decorated on the centre by a rectangle with two intersecting diagonals, flanked by two wreaths. The right wreath is incised in diagonal rope-pattern in sunk relief. A ribbon dangling from the wreath is stylized in a geometric design, creating a monogram of the letters A and Y. The left wreath is only indicated by external engraves in the shape of the greek letter Omega. The right narrow side - is decorated with a concave carved disc. On the front side of the lid - and between the acroteria, is a Hebrew inscription containing eight lines. According to N. Avigad the inscription reads as follow: "Here they lie, Atio, the daughter of Rabbi Gamliel, son of Nehemia, who died a virgin at the age of twenty two years, and Ation, the daughter of Rabbi Judah, the son of Rabbi Gamliel, who died at the age of nine years and six month. May the resurrection [be with the righteous]".

Wreath Inscription
Summary and Remarks
According to N. Avigad, in regard to the inscription, it is assumed that a girl and her aunt were laid in the coffin, and it may be assumed that only the bones were deposited. According to N. Avigad, the wreath motif is very common in Jewish sepulchral art at the end of the second-temple period; it is also encountered frequently in the lintels and friezes of the ancient synagogus.

History/Provenance
The sarcophagus was found in room V. After the excavation the lid was removed to room I, near the entrance of the catacomb, in order to protect the inscription from humidity.
