Fol. 18v, Part II: In Praise of Penitence opens with a scene of the author and five debaters, similar to the four other parts of the book (see fols. 3v, 41v, 52, 68). An author (המחבר) dressed in a long garment is seated in a high-backed chair reading a book placed on a lectern. He is debating with five men standing in front of him, all dressed in long garments, three holding open books. This scene does not follow the caption and text exacly, since it represents more than one interlocutor. The caption above reads: “Image of the interlocutor and author, speaking to each other” (צורת המקשה והמחבר, זה את זה ידבר; Loewe 2004, I:155).
For depictions of the same subject in the other 15th-century manuscripts of Meshal ha-Kadmoni see
Appedix 1: line 21.
For Rothschild Miscellany, see IJA 1982/1/107.
One scene should follow: a shepherd and his flock. However it is absent in all but the 'Milano' manuscript
(see Appedix 1: line 22; Loewe 2004, I:156).
