Fol. 39, the Book of Lamentations: The initial word “How doth” (איכה) is written in large black display letters above the two last text columns in the middle of the page. The foot of the letters aleph (א) and yod (י) are decorated each with a rosette, executed in black ink and spared-ground technique. The last letter (hei ה ) of the initial word is written in a smaller format and in different ink by the hand of Eliah, the scribe of Rashi ‘ s commentary, who needed the space. The original letter hei (ה), written in large display script by the scribe of the main text, is still visible under the commentary. The end of the book of Ecclesiastes is written in tapering shape on top.
