History/Provenance

The Nazis murdered 350 Jews from Korets and unknown number of Jews from Novohrad Volynskyi (Zviahel) in the forest near Sukhovolia [Tsal Kaplun Foundation].

It is unclear, who and when erected the first monument on the killing site. The Holocaust Survivor from Canada, Fania Vedro initiated the installation of the second monument, because her father perished here [Yad Vashem].

Fania Vedro participated in the unveiling ceremony of the monument in Velyki Mezhyrichi, where the relatives of her husband perished. She also visited the killing site in Sukhovolia in 1992. After that, she decided to erect the monument there [Zakaliuk].

With funds of her family, the territory was fenced, and the monument was erected [Yad Vashem].

The unveiling ceremony of the second monument took place on July 14, 1993. The district authority representatives and Vedro family took part in the event. Participants listened to the national anthems of Israel and Ukraine, recited prayers, hanged Ukrainian and Israeli flags, lit candles and laid flowers to the monument [Zakaliuk].
