Description

The monument is located on the mass grave near Pustomyty. It is surrounded with a low concrete fence, the ground around the monument is filled with stones, and the stepped concrete pavement leads to the monument. It is two black stone slabs, which sit close to each other on a common base. The sides of the slabs, which are faced to each other, have symmetrical triangular recesses, which visually form a rhombus-shaped hole in the center of the monument. The hole, together with four gray triangles (two on each slab), located also symmetrically, form an image of a Magen David. In the left slab, there is a Ukrainian inscription, the right slab bears a Hebrew inscription.

History/Provenance

Local residents, who witnessed the Holocaust events, discovered mass graves of Jews in Matiivka and Pustomyty. They contacted the Jewish community representatives about this. After that, the Rabbinical Centre of Europe together with the Ohalei Tzadikim Association erected the monument [RCE]. 

The monuments in Matiivka and Pustomyty were erected in 2020 [Raion in ua, RCE].

The unveiling ceremony of the memorials in Matiivka and Pustomyty took place on July 8, 2021 (Tammuz 28), on the day of mass murder of the last 5,000 Rivne Jews. Local residents, district authority representatives, the representatives of the Rabbinical Centre of Europe together with the Ohalei Tzadikim Association, Jewish community members took part in the event. Rabbi Avraham Abba Torezki recited the prayer "El Malei Rachamim" [RCE].
